International Involvement and the Final Victory As the humanitarian crisis worsened, global attention turned toward East Pakistan. India provided military and humanitarian support, and in December 1971, direct conflict broke out between India and Pakistan. On 16 December 1971, the Pakistani military formally surrendered to the joint forces of Bangladesh and India at the Racecourse Ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in Dhaka. This historic surrender ended the war and secured Bangladesh’s independence.
